Why select Rwy-HDG?

Hello, I read in all Tutorials that I should set the Rwy-HDG before TO. But as long as I dont activate AP this has no effect. And as I activate AP earliest in 1.000 ft, I do not see the benefit or the reason to put the Rwy-Hdg in my PFD. So, whats the reason?

    SOP. You even do this in a Cessna. It's not for the autopilot, it's for you! So if you're veering odd runway heading, it's obvious.

    It also drives the flight director.
